I don’t have any musical background, can I still help my child practice?
Irrespective of your levels of experience and expertise, as a parent, you play a crucial role as your child’s primary music coach. This is because you are available to support your child’s daily practice, whereas your child only sees their teacher for 30/45 minutes once a week during lessons.
It’s alright if you do not have any musical background because there are plenty of other ways to render assistance to your child’s musical journey. For instance, crafting a practice schedule for your child, participating in the practice session, playing music in the home or the car, and even attending concerts/recitals.
Here at JoyWaltzAcademy, we place utmost importance on the synergy between parents, teachers, and students, understanding that cultivating a love of music in your child requires a concerted team effort. Assisting your child in their practice is made easy because of the following:
1. Progress Chart
Each student will be given a progress chart where their teacher will indicate in detail the content, techniques, and concepts covered in class. The progress chart serves as a memory aid which parents can refer to support their child at home, as it might be challenging for children to remember what they are supposed to practice after every lesson.
2. Keeping Parents in the Loop
After each lesson, teachers will also update parents on their child’s progress, highlighting key achievements and elaborating on areas that require more practice. Teachers will spend a few minutes teaching and ensuring parents understand specific music concepts. This debrief session helps parents be clear about what the teacher expects the child to practice and enables teachers to gain more insight into how the child has been practicing at home, offering suggestions when needed.
3. Open Communication Channels
In instances where you feel unsure if your child is using the correct fingering, playing the songs in the correct rhythm, or if their theory exercises are correct, feel free to drop us a message on WhatsApp and attach a picture or video (when the child is playing a song) for our teachers to provide timely feedback.
Conclusion
Helping your child in their practice does not require parents to have a music background. With our academy’s feedback mechanism, assisting your child is a breeze. What is more crucial is being your child’s most enthusiastic supporter, recognising that learning the piano is a continuous journey, not just a destination.
